As I continue to develop my website, I plan to add some of my other new play development projects. This page contains only a few.
Revival
by Bobby Britton Jr.
directed by Slade Billew
Through a series of vignettes set to the gospel hymnal, Revival explores one man’s memories growing up in, coming out to, and, later, coming out of the evangelical church.
I’ve worked on the development of this show through several iterations, first as an actor, pianist, and music director for workshop performances at Stephen. F. Austin State University. I later toured with the show to its international premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland. In the most current iteration, I am an actor and pianist. The show is currently touring to smaller colleges and churches in Texas. At each location, we perform the show and then invite the audience to participate in an interfaith dialogue centered on LGBTQIA2S+ experiences and allyship.
One by Four
devised by the ensemble
directed by Alexis Riley and Slade Billew
One by Four is a longform improvisation form. Four performers receive suggestions from audience members in response to the theme “coming of age.” From these suggestions, actors create one-, two-, three-, and four-person scenes, weaving them into a lyrical meditation on the passage of time.
One by Four was my first attempt at devising an improvisational form (largely) on my own. I was fortunate to get to work with four fantastic undergraduate students who workshopped and rehearsed the piece from conception to performance.
